Coimbra is mainly an University Town, but it is also an historic city with many monuments and other historic treasures with a busy commerce and the vibrant presence of the Mondego river , the "River of Poets" as locals call it proudly , offering visitors the beauty of its banks, making the city an important touristic destination.
It is highlighted some of the most famous monuments.
The main gate of the medieval city wall, called Almedina Arch.

The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha was built in the 14th century on the left bank of the Mondego river , but had to be abandoned in the 17th century due to frequent floods. The monastery were excavated and restorations were made. Now the ruined church reopened to the public.
